There were 15 new senators (two Democrats, 13 Republicans) and 73 new representatives (21 Democrats, 52 Republicans), as well as two new delegates (both Democrats), at the start of the first session. Additionally, two senators (one Democrat, one Republican) and nine representatives (six Democrats, three Republicans) took office on various dates in order to fill vacancies during the 97th Congress before it ended on January 3, 1983.
